Successfully Treating Diabetes with Alternative Medicine

A personal experience

My Beginning with Diabetes

I still live with diabetes today, but my values have improved drastically. And I truly believe it is possible that I can completely heal my diabetes.

About eight years ago, I developed gestational diabetes during pregnancy. My diabetologist told me it would disappear after giving birth, but I already had a feeling … that it would stay. And that’s exactly what happened. Since then, I’ve had diabetes – just like about one third of all women who develop gestational diabetes.

(Expert note: Around 30–50% of women with gestational diabetes continue to have impaired glucose metabolism or later develop type 2 diabetes.)

My Path Without Medication

From the very beginning, I refused to take insulin or Metformin, even after birth. For me, relying on synthetic medication was not an option. Instead, I cut out all forms of sugar and carbohydrates as much as possible: no fruits, no sweets, no flour products, no potatoes, no rice – basically nothing rich in carbohydrates.

I actually lived on “just” vegetables, salads, legumes, nuts, eggs, fish, and cheese. Occasionally, I bought sugar-free chocolate. But I truly missed chocolate, sweets – and fruits!

I always kept myself active: running, biking, yoga. I was slim to begin with.

With this lifestyle, I could usually keep my post-meal blood sugar within range, though my fasting blood sugar was almost always too high (between 130 and 140 mg/dl). My HbA1c also stayed elevated at around 6.9%.

(Expert note: The normal range is below 5.7%; diabetes is diagnosed from 6.5% and above.)

Stress as a Trigger

As a holistic health consultant, I know body and soul are connected. So I kept asking myself: What was the emotional trigger? A conflict? A block?

At that time, there was a specific person in my life with whom I constantly felt inner resistance. I felt like I had to defend myself all the time, as if this person were invading my private space, my “territory.” I lost trust, felt exposed – and my system went into fight mode. My blood sugar worsened.

The First Breakthrough with Baking Soda

When this person eventually moved away, I slowly recovered. I felt safer, I could breathe again, my stress levels dropped – and my blood sugar improved.

A friend suggested I try a 10-day baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) cleanse, claiming it would balance my acid-base levels, detoxify, and reduce inflammation.

(Expert note: Sodium bicarbonate can influence acid-base balance and neutralize stomach acid. While direct effects on diabetes haven’t been proven, many people report feeling better when using it short-term.)

I gave it a try – and couldn’t believe it. Within just a few days, my values were almost normal: fasting between 90 and 115 mg/dl, and even after FRUIT (!) everything was in range.

Of course, my diabetes wasn’t cured – I knew I couldn’t just eat a cake or a whole bar of chocolate. But at least 70% improvement had taken place. I was thrilled and knew: healing is possible, and my pancreas definitely works!

Relapses and Realizations

When I met this person again, everything came back. My inner resistance – and my diabetes values went right back up.

This cycle repeated itself. Improvements, then setbacks, usually connected with stress or emotional triggers. Over time, though, my long-term improvement stabilized at around 80%.

I realized: My physical resistance mirrored my emotional resistance.

When I fought, my body closed its cell walls – insulin resistance. The sugar stayed in my blood, providing “energy for the fight.”

When I relaxed, my system opened again, and sugar could be absorbed into the cells.

Experiments with Nutrition

I tried many approaches:

  • 7 days of fasting – dream results, but I had no energy since I was already slim.

  • Raw food – great results, but I still had to limit fruit.

  • Cutting out animal products – brought further improvement.

But still, I wasn’t healed.

Herbal Medicine: My Breakthrough

Turmeric and cinnamon helped a little, but didn’t bring significant changes – until I discovered berberine.

Berberine – My Turning Point

I read that berberine acts similarly to Metformin. And indeed: it was a bull’s eye! From the very first day (at just 250 mg), my post-meal values improved dramatically – even after fruit, my blood sugar stayed normal. I felt more energetic, my belly flattened, and I even lost some weight.

(Expert note: Berberine increases insulin sensitivity, slows sugar absorption in the gut, and supports the liver in breaking down glucose. Studies show comparable effects to Metformin, though berberine is not officially approved as a diabetes medication.)

Inositol as a Complement

About two months ago, I added Myo-Inositol with D-Chiro-Inositol.

(Expert note: Inositols are vitamin-like substances that improve glucose metabolism by enhancing insulin signaling in the cells. They are often used in PCOS but can also be beneficial in insulin resistance.)

My values stayed stable – whether from berberine, inositol, or simply my body’s own healing, I don’t know. But for me, it works perfectly.

My Life Today

Today I still eat lots of vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fruits. Throughout the day I enjoy fruit, sometimes something more carbohydrate-rich, here and there a healthy chocolate bar, coconut water, fresh orange juice, dates, or figs.

If I want a sweet drink, I prepare cacao or turmeric latte with honey and stevia. Occasionally, I also eat fish or cheese – in moderation.

My diabetes is not completely gone. But it is strongly reduced, and I can feel that I am on the path to healing. I’ve learned so much on this journey, and I am grateful I followed my own way – without rushing into medication, but instead researching, experimenting, and listening to my body.

Conclusion and Invitation

For me, daily medication is not an option unless it’s absolutely vital. I am convinced that many health conditions can be treated holistically – and that healing allows us to grow along the way.
